Munnar is a small hill station in Cochin Kerala. It is known for its unique colonial and post-colonial history and tea plantations. One cannot complete a visit to Munnar without visiting the tea plantations. Kerala became one of the leading producers of tea after 1964 when Finely Muir collaborated with the Tata Tea group to cultivate tea. Since then Kerala has been known to produce 21 million kilograms of tea annually.
The Eravikulam National Park in Kerala is the oldest national park in India. It also the largest population of the Nilgiri Tahr. There are around 26 species of mammals, 132 bird species and 19 amphibian species in this park and all of them are protected by wildlife authorities.
Thekady, a small place in the district of Idukki, Kerala, is famous for its wildlife reserve. It is was declared as a tiger reserve in 1978 and has been a protected territory since. Though it is a tiger reserve, the area is also a home to elephants, gaurs, Nilgiri langurs and so on. Visitors can often see these animals coming to a small lake for a drink. The lake also has a unique history. It is formed by accident after the Mullaperiyar Dam came in place.
